Description of organization
The IRCCS Fondazione Stella Maris is the largest hospital for Child Neurology and Psychiatry in Italy and a leading institute for research in Child Neurology and Psychiatry, associated with the University of Pisa and the National Health Service. The hospital cares for more than 2000 patients a year, half as inpatients and half as outpatients, and provides for more than 8000 ambulatory consultations.
In the Clinical Department, both psychiatric and neurological disorders are treated in the hospital. The psychiatric branch includes two units. The first addresses specifically diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders and eating disorders. The second address diagnosis and pharmacological treatment of the following disorders: mood disorders, psychotic disorders and schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette syndrome, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, personality disorders, psychiatric disorders in mental retardation. In this unit, a section is devoted to the emergency care of acute psychiatric disorders and another to the assessment and treatment of severe disruptive behaviour disorders with a multimodal intervention.
The neurological branch is organized in one unit for diagnosis and treatment of cerebral palsy, epilepsy, movement disorders, genetic disorders, neuromuscular diseases, traumatic head injury, speech and language disorders, neuropsychological disorders, mental retardation and specific learning disabilities.
The Research Department is organized in five areas, Developmental Neurology, Neuropsychology and Neuro-rehabilitation; Epilepsy, Neurophysiology and Neurogenetics; Psychopathology and Psychopharmacology; Psychiatric Genetics and Psychotherapy; Neuroimaging.
Several laboratories are located in the IRCCS Fondazione Stella Maris that are servers both for clinical and research departments, among them the Laboratory of Magnetic Resonance Imaging and of Neurogenetics.

Gabriele Masi is currently head of the Psychiatry and Psychopharmacology unit and of the Psychopathology and Psychopharmacology Research area. Main fields of research are child and adolescent clinical psychiatry and psychopharmacology of bipolar disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, conduct disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders and psychotic disorders. He has been principal investigator of many research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Health and by pharmaceutical industries (multi-site international drug trials). He has published more than 350 papers on child and adolescent psychiatry, most of them on peer-reviewed journals.

Paola Brovedani is a Child Psychologist working in the Neurology Unit. Her areas of clinical and research expertise are neuropsychological assessment in epilepsy, in focal brain damage and psychiatric disorders.
Annarita Milone (MD) is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and currently coordinates the section for the assessment and treatment of severe disruptive behaviour disorders with a multi-modal intervention.
Francesca Lenzi (MD) is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist participating in the Psychopathology and Psychopharmacology Research Area. Her area of post- doctoral clinical research is in the assessment and treatment of conduct disorder.
Maria Mucci (MD) is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist specialized in the emergency care of acute psychiatric disorders, with clinical and research expertise on bipolar disorders and schizophrenia.
Stefania Millepiedi (MD, PhD) is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist participating in the Psychopathology and Psychopharmacology Research Area. Her areas of expertise include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders.
Stefano Berloffa (MD) is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist working in the ADHD group. His areas of research expertise include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder.
